Alice Sheridan worked as a weaver for TKWM from 1901 to 1909.
Alice Sheridan was born 22 September 1881, in Salem, Oregon, to John and Catherine [Micklebrook] Sheridan. Though born in Salem, Alice was raised in Lebanon, Oregon.
By 1900, at age 18, Alice was working as a domestic servant for the Gatch family and living at their home on Oak Street in Salem. The following year, she began work as a weaver at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill, where several of her sisters were also employed. She remained at the mill until 1909.
That same year, Alice enrolled in night classes at Capital Business College, training to become a stenographer. By 1910, she had moved to Portland and was working for Sealy-Lowell Co. As a stenographer, boarding at 630 E. 39th St.
On 17 April 1920, Alice married John T. Fothergill in Oregon City. At the time, she was employed as a stenographer, and he worked as a salesman. Their marriage return listed her age as 30 and his as 39.
In 1930, the couple lived on East Grant Street in Portland where Alic worked as a cashier for a trust company. She remained in Portland through the 1940s and 1950s, residing with her husband John. Census records from those years list her as married, with no occupation noted.
Later in life, following the death of her husband John in 1958, Alice found employment with Equitable Savings & Loan Association. She was a longtime member of St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church.
Alice died on 24 August 1982, at a care center in Portland. She was 100 years old. She was interred at Wilhelm’s Portland Memorial Mausoleum alongside her husband John. The couple had no children. |
