Augusta (Gusta) Donaldson Allport worked at TKWM starting in the summer of 1930 through 1952.
Gusta was born on 6 Aug 1882 in Sweden. She immigrated with her family to the U.S. in 1887 and soon became a naturalized citizen. After a brief time in Minnesota, the Donaldson family moved on to become early settlers in Dallas, OR.
Gusta’s father died in 1892 after the family settled in Dallas. Her mother Carolina was left a widow at age 51 and thereafter, her brothers George, Charles and Emil supported the family. The brothers were aged 25, 23 and 21 at the time. Gusta was 18 and helped around the house while 15-year-old Oscar and 12-year-old Hilge attended school. Four of Gusta’s five brothers worked at TKWM at some time.
In 1901, Gusta married Normal L. Allport who emigrated from Canada to the US in 1896. He worked at TKWM along with his father. By 1905 the Donaldson family had moved to Salem. Oscar was working as a spinner at TKWM and lived apart from the family. Emil, George and Hilge also worked at the mill.
By 1910, Norman and Gusta had moved to Eugene and started a family business. By 1920, the family had moved to Provo, UT where Norman was a foreman in the Provo Woolen Mill. The Utah adventure was short lived and by 1924, Norman was back in Salem at TKWM as a boss carder. Gusta and the family lived at 478 S 16th in Salem. They were the parents of 9 children: Alice, Carl, Norman, Emil, Florence, Ellen, Thomas, Donald, Aurelia, and Lawrence.
Sadly, in early July 1930, Norman passed away after a massive heart attack. Augusta was left a widow without support and elected to ask for work at TKWM. She was employed as a weaver until retirement in 1952. Afterward, she supported herself by managing the apartment building where she lived. Augusta Allport died in Salem on 8 Oct 1955 and was buried in Belcrest Memorial Park alongside her husband Norman. |
