In cataloging an old scrapbook today, we came across a newspaper clipping (2010.067.0018) from the Hollywood Press, dated 1928. The information given in the masthead was as follows:

Published every Friday at 2078 North Capitol Street, Salem, Oregon, which location is in the industrial, manufacturing, commercial and beautiful homes section known as Hollywood. A.M. Church Editor. Stanford C. Sparks, Advertising Manager.

Not having heard of this paper before, we started digging. There is a Hollywood Star published in Salem available on microfilm in the U of O collections, dating February 1939.

Intrigued we looked further.  The 1928-1929 City Directory lists the Hollywood Press, with G.H. Estle as manager and Church as editor at 1992 N. Capitol Street in Salem.  In the same edition, Church is listed as A. Maurice Church who lived with his wife Rose at 643 N. Winter.  Church lists his occupation as editor, so it is likely that it was a full-time operation.  Through city directories we can follow Church’s career and the changing names of the Hollywood Press.  Church started out working as a compositor (a person who sets type and/or works with layout of text and images in printing) for the State Printing Office (City Directory 1926-1927).  He is listed as working with the Hollywood Press through 1932, when the paper disappears from the City Directories.  In 1934, however, Church appears as the Editor/Publisher of the Capital Press, a newspaper that is still printing today.  A quick Google search provided us with a brief history of the Capital Press.
