I Baked a Cake for Ike and Mamie! by Eileen Hadley Givens focuses on her grandparents, Douglas and Mabel McKay, prominent Salem residents who were active on the Oregon and national political scenes in the 1930s-1950s. Douglas served as a Salem Mayor, Oregon State Senator, Governor of Oregon, and Secretary of Interior under President Eisenhower.

Mabel was a prolific correspondent, and the hundreds of letters she wrote to family and friends are a journal of sorts – an “unbound memoir” – that gives an inside look at the McKays’ years in Washington, D.C. in the 1950s.
