Story  James Denton worked at TKWM from it’s opening in 1890 through about 1900.

James Denton was born in Batley, Yorkshire, England on 21 December 1847 to Thomas and Eliza Denton. On 19 September 1869, James married Agnes Smith. They were the parents of four children born in England. James may have started his working life in the woolen milling business before emigrating to the U.S. in 1885.

In 1889, we find a James Denton working at the San Francisco Pioneer Woolen Mill as a carder, but further research must be done to prove the connection to our James Denton. A year later, our James was the foreman of the carding department at TKWM at the mill’s opening. In 1895 the Denton family is still in Salem with two of James’ children working as music teachers

James moved to Oregon City around 1900 for work as a woolen mill carding room foreman but his family stayed in Salem. He then worked for the Brownsville Woolen Mill for a short time around 1910. By 1915, he had retired. In 1916 James and Agnes were living in Portland, then by 1920 they were living with their daughter Agnes Crowther.

James passed away on 13 January 1924 at age 76 in Portland. His ashes are interred at Wilhelm’s Portland Memorial Mausoleum in Portland. Along with him are his wife Agnes, son J.C. and daughter Agnes Gertrude
