| Life Story
|
Johnnie Weekly worked for TKWM in various roles from 1929-1956, primarily fireman and watchman. His brother Preston and nephew Wade also worked for the mill.
John William Weekly, known as Johnnie, was born on 26 June 1891 in Kirby, Missouri, to John and Sarah [Stewart] Weekly. He migrated west in the early 1900s, settling first in Montana and later in Salem, Oregon, by 1926.
Johnnie served in the U.S. military during World War I, enlisting from Bozeman, Montana, and serving from 22 July 1918, to 15 June 1919. After the war, he began a long career at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill (TKWM), where he worked in various roles – including fireman and, later, watchman – until his retirement on 1 Dec 1956.
On 31 May 1930, Johnnie married Goldie M. Widner, a divorcee with two young sons, Ransom and Lewis. At the time of their marriage in Vancouver, Washington, Johnnie was 38 and employed at TKWM, while Goldie, age 27, worked as a clerk. After marriage, Goldie found work as a laundress and seamstress at Capital City Laundry in Salem. By 1942, the couple resided at 65 Abrahams Ave. in Salem.
Johnnie’s World War II draft registration described him as 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 142 pounds, with a ruddy complexion, gray hair, and blue eyes.
He passed away on 24 Aug 1964, at age 73, while receiving care at the Veterans Hospital in Vancouver, Washington. His death was attributed to pneumonia and emphysema. He was buried at Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem. |
