Lela Juanita Lynch worked for TKWM as a spinner in 1906-1907. She went by her middle name, Juanita. Her sisters Nina and Lourita also worked for the mill.
Lela Juanita Lynch was born on 25 July 1888 in Hopewell, Yamhill, Oregon. Her parents were Isaac and Lela (Stephens) Lynch, early pioneers of Yamhill County. They moved to Salem around 1900. Juanita’s father worked as a farmer, janitor and elevator operator at Salem Bank & Trust in the Guardian Building. Her mother was notably one of Salem’s first police matrons. Juanita was the second of four daughters born to the couple.
Juanita was a very social young lady with many friends. She was active in the Baptist church in Salem. In 1906, she participated in a subscription contest held by the Daily Oregon Statesman newspaper, where she led for a time and ultimately placed second with an impressive 266,586 votes.
Around this time, Frank Marion Napes, a private in the National Guard was stationed in Salem. On 14 Aug 1907 Juanita married Frank in a beautiful ceremony at her parents’ home in Salem. Life was good for the young newlyweds.
The couple welcomed their first daughter on 9 Nov 1908 at their home on Ferry St. They named her Frances Juanita Mapes. In July 1909, the young couple purchased the Edwards Meat Market at 1156 State St. and operated it until selling to F.P. Farrington in October 1913.
Their second daughter, Verna Lela Mapes, was born on 23 Dec 1913. Frank changed occupation by going into plumbing, possibly learning the trade at Graber Plumbing, owned by his brother-in-law John Graber. He eventually ran his own plumbing business for many years until retirement.
Both Frank and Juanita were very involved in the Salem community. They served as Marion County Clerks of Court and were active members of local clubs. Frank also served on the U.S. Federal grand jury in Portland at one time.
Juanita had health issues and underwent a surgical operation in 1917. She recovered from this but later suffered two strokes in the years leading up to her death.
The Mapes family lived in the Liberty area south of Salem on acreage in Sunnyside Fruit Farms, which they sold in 1941. While visiting their daughter in Lacey, Washington, Juanita passed away on 7 Apr 1945, from pneumonia following a cerebral hemorrhage. Funeral services were held at the Clough-Barrick Chapel on April 11, and she was interred at Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem.
Frank remarried twice after Juanita’s death. First to Nelli Varley on 7 Mar 1947. She passed away in 1966. Frank again remarried on 15 Oct 1966 to Alice May Hill. Alice survived him. Frank passed away on 22 Mar 1974 at his home. He was buried beside Juanita at Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem. |
