2375 Myrtle Ave. 

Marie Elizabeth Finley was born 5 Aug 1894 in Kansas to John R. Finley, a carpenter, and Mary L. Hall Finley, a dressmaker. By 1901, the Finley family had relocated to Oregon, settling in Salem by 1910. Marie grew up alongside her older brother Frank and younger brother John D., who joined the family in 1907.  

On 23 Aug 1911, at age 17, Marie married Floyd Marion Cheffings, a carman with the Salem trolley system. The newlyweds moved into a modest cabin on her parent’s property at 624 S. 12th St. in Salem. Around 1913, Marie briefly worked as a weaver at Thomas Kay Woolen Mill (TKWM), alongside Floyd. While Floyd continued mill work for several years, Marie soon stepped away from paid labor to focus on homemaking – a role she would embrace for the rest of her life.  

By 1918, the couple had moved to Portland, where their daughter Grace Marian was born on March 11. That same spring, Floyd’s father was tragically killed in a railroad accident, marking a difficult chapter for the family. 

In the years that followed, Floyd began a long career with the Texas Oil Company, and by 1930, the Cheffings family was firmly settled in Portland. Marie supported Floyd’s steady rise from clerk to factory foreman, and later his return to clerical work in the 1950s. Grace married in 1946, and the family remained close-knit. 

Floyd passed away on 21 Jan 1957 and was interred at Wilhelm’s Portland Memorial Mausoleum. Marie’s brother Frank died the following year, and Marie herself passed away on 22 Jan 1968. She was buried beside Floyd.

Capital Journal 1 Apr 1918, pg. 4 – Charles Cheffings accidental death in Scio while working on a railroad section crew. His malfunctioning motor car collided with another on the track, and he died from his injuries before he could be rushed to help in Scio. Buried in Aumsville Cemetery.  

Statesman Journal 14 June 1953, pg. 5 – Wesley Charles Cheffings (brother) obituary. Late resident of 1534 Olive St, died in a local hospital on 12 Jun 1953. Survivors: wife Georgia J Cheffings of Salem, son Wesley O Cheffings of Spokane, son Charles E Cheffings of Salem, mother Estella J Hoagland of Portland and brother Floyd M Cheffings of Portland.   

Statesman Journal 23 Jan 1957, pg. 2 –  Floyd M. Cheffings obituary.  Age 65 in Portland. Born in Suring, WI on 13 Dec 1891 and came to Aumsville in 1906. Later moved to Salem where he married Marie Finley in Aug 1911. During his time in this area, he operated a city streetcar.  The couple moved to Portland in1925 where Cheffings was employed by the Texas Oil Co until he retired in Dec 1956. Survivors: widow Mrs. Marie Cheffings, Portland, daughter, Mrs. Marian Betts, Portland and mother Mrs. Estella J Hoagland, Portland.   

Capital Journal 18 Jun 1958, pg. 13 – Estella Cheffings Hoagland obituary. Died on 16 Jun 1858 at age 84 in Portland, formally of Aumsville. First husband Charles Cheffings died in 1918. Many years later she married William Hoagland who dies several years ago. Two sons Floyd and Wesley Cheffings preceded her in death.
