Marie G. Meithof worked in the sewing room at TKWM starting 18 Sep 1950. A few of her sons also worked for the mill.
Marie Gertrude Blum was born on 14 Apr 1911, in Minnesota, the only child of John and Veronica Blum. She grew up in Frazee, Minnesota. In 1924, at the age of 12, Marie came to Salem, Oregon with her family. She was a devoted member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church.
On 18 Apr 1929, at the age of 18, Marie married John Meithof in the Catholic Church in St. Louis, Oregon. John a 21-year-old farm laborer, and Marie, a waitress, began their life together in Brooks, Oregon, where they rented a home and welcomed their first child, Donald. Over the years, the couple had seven children: Donald, Alfred, Doris, Mildred, James, Francis, and Charles. By 1940, the family had grown to eight children, and they settled on a farm in Quinaby, Oregon.
In 1945, Marie and John divorced, with court records citing cruel and inhuman treatment as the cause. Following the separation, Marie and the children moved to Salem, Oregon, residing at 434 S. Cottage Street by 1950. That same year, she found employment at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in the sewing room.
Former husband John Meithof passed away on 8 Dec 1952, at the age of 44, from kidney cancer. Marie continued her life in Salem, where she remained active in her church community and family. She passed away on 14 May 1991, at the age of 80 and was laid to rest at Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem, Oregon. |
