The Wednesday edition of the papers focused almost entirely on election results. The headlines in the Capital Journal, to select a few included:

STORY OF WAR NOW INCLUDES TURKS; DAY’S NEWS IN BRIEF

Much naval activity was developing in connection with the European war today.

A strong German fighting squadron was reported to have left its base presumably to prey on the allies’ shipping, and indications were that a British fleet hoped to intercept and give it battle.

Admiral Von Spee, commander of the German cruisers Gnesienau, Scharnhorst, Dresden Nurnberg and Leipsic, which sunk the British cruiser Monmouth, undoubtedly destroyed the cruiser Good Hope and forced the cruiser Glasgow and supply ship Otranto to intern in neutral harbors off Chile Sunday, reported that the loss of life was “terrible.”

With the entry of Turkey into the war, another headline reported that an Anglo-French fleet had begun bombardment of the Turkish fortifications in the Dardanelles.
