Life Story

Preston Weekly worked for TKWM from 1930 – 1938 as a washer in the finishing department. Brother John and son Wade also worked for the mill.

Preston Weekly was born 22 Jan 1887 to John W. and Sarah [Stewart] Weekly in Missouri. He married Virgie Lee Mason on 18 Sep 1907 in Shelbina, Missouri. Together they had five children.

By 1910, Preston was farming in Black Creek, Missouri. At age 22, he lived with his wife, their first child, his mother Sarah, and two of his brothers. The family remained in Black Creek for nearly two decades.

In March 1929, Preston’s wife Virgie died following surgery for appendicitis. The 1930 census recorded Preston as a 43-year-old widower, still farming in Black Creek and raising four of his children.

Later that year, the family relocated to Salem, Oregon. Preston began work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in December 1930, possibly joining his brother John, who had moved to Salem in 1926. Like many families during the Depression era, the move may have been motivated by the promise of steady employment.

Preston died in Salem on 13 Jan 1938 at the age of 50. According to cemetery records, the cause of death was peritonitis following a recent colostomy. He was buried in Belcrest Memorial Cemetery in Salem.
