Life Story

Wade Weekly worked for TKWM as a fuller from 1936-1941. His father and uncle also worked for the mill.

Wade Edward Weekly was born 10 July 1912 in Shelbyville, Missouri, to Preston and Virgie Lee [Mason] Weekly. Little is recorded about his early years, including the circumstances surrounding his mother’s death in 1929. By 1930, census records show the family living in Black Creek, Missouri, where 17-yearo-old Wade worked as a general laborer on the family farm.

He married Ada Lee Boyles on 25 Sep 1931, in Shelbyville, Missouri. The couple relocated to Salem, Oregon in October 1933. Wade began working in the finishing department at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in December 1936. As a fuller, he was responsible for cleaning and raising the nap on woven wool fabric – a critical step in textile production. He remained at the mill until 1941, working alongside his father and uncle.

By 1940, Wade and Ada were living on Church St. In Salem. His World War II draft registration described him as 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 140 pounds, with a light brown complexion, brown hair, and hazel eyes.

After leaving the mill, Wade turned to carpentry, building homes in the growing Salem area. By 1950, he and Ada had two children – Joanna and Jack – and had built a home at 4135 Macleay Rd. in the Four Corners neighborhood.

He died in Salem on 23 Jan 1990, at the age of 77. His wife Ada passed away the following year. Both are buried at Belcrest Memorial Park.

According to his obituary, Wade enjoyed carpentry, bingo, and fishing. He was active in the community, serving as a trustee of the Eagles Lodge and as a member of the Elks Lodge No. 336 in Salem.
