Story  Walter Basey worked as a Spooler for a short time at TKWM at the time of its opening.

Walter Scott Basey was born in Salem on 20 Sep 1874. He was the son of A J Basey, a well-known livery operator who personally drove a hearse carriage for many area funerals in and around Salem

Walter was living with his family and attending business school in Salem when he found the job at the newly opened TKWM in 1890. The job allowed him to begin living on his own. He soon started another job as a bookkeeper while renting a room at 58 State St.

Through the remainder of the decade, Walter’s life took him to several locations. He worked at his fathers second business, a confectionery and fruit stand. He worked at one of the Waterloo mills and traveled to San Francisco. He took a civil service exam to work for the post office.

By 1905, Walter was working in Portland as a bookkeeper and married to Izora V E Byers Basey. They had one child, Andrew, before Izora tragically died in fire at her sister’s house. Walter went on to raise Andrew with the help of his elderly mother-in-law while working several jobs. Near the end of his life, he and Andrew worked together caring for apple orchards

Walter died in 1935 and is buried Multnomah Park Cemetery, Portland, OR.
