Museum staff recently uncovered a newspaper companion piece to this series of photographs from the McEwan Photo Studio. This article provides additional details and identifies participants. Below is a transcript from the Capital Journal, originally published on June 24, 1961.
Wed this afternoon at a service in the Calvary Baptist Church were Miss Lucy Fulgham Hendrick of Salem and John Wesley Haynes of San Bernadino, California.
The Rev. Tracy Greer Gipson officiated at the 2 o’clock ceremony. Blue carnations and white gladioluses decorated the altar, and at the pews were blue and white bows. Mrs. Clyde Gilman and Mrs. Rubdell Joe, sister of the bride, sang, and Mrs. Willis Blake played the organ.
The bride wore a pale blue lace over satin, afternoon-length dress. It was styled with fitted bodice, long sleeves and full skirt. The bride wore a headpiece with the shoulder-length veil matching her dress, and she carried a white Bible with white lilies on it. Luke Duckitt, a family friend from Portland, gave the bride in marriage.
Mrs. Charles Patterson of Portland was matron of honor. She wore a beige nylon chiffon over satin dress with beige hat, and carried a nosegay of brown orchids.
Lucius Haynes was best man for his brother. Ushers were Wilbur Haynes, another brother; Jack Bosh, and Frank Darley, a brother-in-law of the bridegroom.
The reception also was at the church. Cutting the cake were Mrs. Don Vann, Mrs. Lucius Haynes and Mrs. Wilson Walker. Pouring were Mrs. Luke Duckitt, Mrs. Albert Johnston, and Dr. Mary DuBois. Assisting were Mrs. Herbert Sprewell and Mrs. Rubdell Joe, sisters of the bride; Mrs. Victor Sword, Mrs. Jesse Robinson, Mrs. Frank Darley, and Mrs. Elyard Ralls.
