Harold A Buettner (1912-1998)   

Paul Max Fred Buettner was born on 7 Apr 1878 in Chicago, Illinois, to Fred and Louisa Buettner. His parents were both immigrants from Germany.  Fred was a carpenter, and by 1895, he had brought his family and his trade to Marion County, Oregon. At that time, Paul had two younger siblings: Louis and Elsie. Sadly, Elsie died in October of that year and was buried at the Pioneer Cemetery in Salem.   

Soon after that, young Paul began working in dye house of the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. At age 18, this may have been his first paying job. He remained there until the summer of 1898, when he took an apprenticeship as a mechanic, still in Salem. In late 1904, Paul married Hertha Meyer and soon became an engineer with the Salem Brewing Association. They boarded on Trade St. at the northeast corner of 24th St. In 1905, the couple is recorded in a Portland city directory at 229 Gains St. Paul works for the Gembrinus Brewing Co.  

By 1910, Paul and Hertha had moved to Santa Clara County, California, where they welcomed daughter, Irene. By 1920, they had relocated to Oakland and added a son, Harold. They remained in Oakland through 1930, while Paul continued working as a stationary engineer for various companies.   

After their children were grown, Paul and Hertha divorced. By 1940, at the age of 62, Paul was living in San Jose and working for a brewing company. He had a housekeeper named Emily Hauff. By 1950, he was semi-retired, doing carpentry work in Paradise, California, where Emily had become his companion.  

Paul died on 18 Nov 1960, at the age of 82, in Paradise and was buried at Paradise Cemetery. Hertha died in 1959, their daughter, Irene Buettner Boeber, in 1985, and their son Harold, in 1989 – all of them in northern California.

Paul Max Buettner died at age 82. Native of IL, he resided at 5243 Olice St, Paradise, CA for the past 15 years. 

Born in Chicago on 7 Apr 1878, moving to Oregon as a child. He later came to CA and worked as an engineer for many years. Came to Paradise after retirement.  He had been ill for several months.  A niece is the only survivor.
