Life Story 

 

Betsy Hull Barker worked as a burler in the finishing room at TKWM from 1924-late 1930s. Her husband Amos H. Barker also worked for the mill. 

Bertha M. Barker was born 15 Oct 1883 in Mehama, Oregon to Franklin Uberta Hull and Cordelia Parditta Morriss. Her father was a lawyer. She was one of three children born to the couple. She attended public school in Mehama through 8th grade. On June 14, 1903, Bertha married Amos H. Barker in Mehama. They moved to Portland where Amos had a job as a streetcar conductor. One son would be born to the couple, Gordon A. Barker. 

Around 1915 they returned to Marion County, where they farmed off Silverton Rd. three quarters of a mile north of Salem city limits. They moved to Lee St. In Salem at the beginning of WWI. Amos’ draft registration states his occupation as a cloth washer in the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. During the war, from January 1918 through April 1919, Amos served in the Oregon Militia (National Guard) on the home front. Bertha joined Amos at the woolen mill in 1924, where she took work as a burler in the finishing department. She remained until the late 1930s according to available payroll records.  

Amos died 28 Sep 1950 at the age of 76. He was buried in Belcrest Cemetery in Salem. Bertha died 15 Mar 1967 in a Salem nursing home, she had been in ill health for quite some time according to her obituary. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Salem Chadwick Chapter of Eastern Star and Court Street Christian Church. She was buried in Belcrest Cemetery alongside Amos.
