Life Story

Carrie E. Sargeant briefly worked as a spinner and in the finishing department of the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in 1900.

Carrie Etta Sargeant was born 6 Oct 1879 in Polk County Oregon to Lewis Cass and Charlotte [James] Sargeant. She was one of two children born to the couple. After the death of her father in 1899, the family moved to Salem and Carrie obtained her first job at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill.

On 29 September 1901 Carrie married Frank Wait[e] at the home of her mother, in Yamhill County. The couple then moved to the Seattle area where Frank had a job as a postal carrier. It didn’t last long. He was fired in 1905 for insulting a photo of Pres. Roosevelt hanging in the window of a woman on his mail route. The woman’s letter of complaint went all the way to the president’s desk in Washington D.C. and the order came back to discharge the mail carrier.

Frank determined to pursue another line of business and trained to be a plumber. One son would be born to the couple, Floyd Elton Wait[e]. In 1916 the family pulled up stakes and went to Alberta, Canada to homestead. They filed claim on a piece of land near Tide Lake. They worked the land until 1925 when, too heavily in debt to the seed merchant, they gave up the claim and returned to the Kirkland area. Frank died 27 May 1933 in Kirkland, WA and was cremated.

After his death, Carrie married for a second time on 21 Aug 1943, a Seattle grocer named Raymond King. It is unclear how long this marriage lasted and how it ended. Both are listed separately in the 1950 census as widowers.

Carrie died 19 Nov 1964 in Seattle, WA. She was also cremated. Her obituary stated that she had resided in Seattle 63 years. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, the Grandmothers’ Club and the Women’s City Club.
