Chester ‘Chet’ Elton Page

October 11, 1908 – May 16, 2003

JEFFERSON – Chet was born to Chester Albert and Mary Elizabeth (Ellison) Page. Raised in Rhode Island where his father managed a woolen mill. Chet traveled with him to Wisconsin and Michigan for his work. Chet carried on in his father’s industry and was very committed to sports in later years. During the eighth grade he won three first place prizes for the 50, 100, and 220-yard dashes at a Michigan State track meet. His whole family moved to California, Mo. When he was a freshman. While there he won 220 and 440-yard dashes at district meets and set a standing record at Aurora High School in 1927 for the 440-yard dash. They later moved to Oregon where Chet worked alongside his father at Kay Woolen Mill in Salem. Chet traveled back east to Wakefield for the Portland Multnomah Club and ran at meets all over New England. He took first place in the 220-yard dash at the Scotch Caledonian Games in Providence, R.I., and was a track coach at a high school there. He returned to Oregon and became assistant superintendent under his father at Kay Woolen Mill. Over the years Chet supervised mills in Eureka, Calif. And Vancouver, B.C. He also helped his family run the Brownsville Woolen Mill until it burned down in 1955. He met Agnes Marie Johansen while in Eureka and they were married in 1950. After being superintendent of Oregon Flax Textiles in Salem for three years, he and Agnes owned Page’s Sweet Shop in downtown Brownsville. They later settled in Jefferson where Chet built and managed his last woolen mill. A past mayor of Jefferson , Chet was also a deputy sheriff for Marion County. He maintained a carpet business out of his home until he retired at eighty. He enjoyed organizing city league teams and was the assistant track coach at Willamette University for three years. A member of the Elks and Lions Clubs, he will be remembered as a loving husband and father who was involved in the community. (Obituary – Statesman Journal May 28 2003 p. 5)
