Dick Smith (Detrick Schmidt) worked as a weaver at TKWM from about 1930 to 1935.
Detrick R Schmidt was born on 7 Apr 1906 / 1907 in Utica, Montana. Various primary reference source documentation suggests both years. All references after 1920 show his parents to be Cornelius and Anna Schmidt who emigrated from Russia in 1874. However, Detrick is not shown in their family of 7 children in the 1910 census when he should have been three years old. There was another 4-year-old son named Cornelius. By 1920, Detrick is included in the family record, but the son named Cornelius is missing. A name change might have taken place. Another possibility is that Detrick is the son of one of the daughters Susan or Lena who would have been18 and 19 when Detrick was born. Cornelius and Anna may have raised him as their son.
The family had ties to the northwest prior to their time in Montana. Four of Detrick’s older brothers were born in either Oregon or Washington. By 1920, all the children except Alexander (24) and Detrick (14) had left the family farm and by 1925, the family had moved back to Oregon. It was then that Father Cornelius passed away in Marion County. In 1928, Detrick supported his widowed mother by working at Cherry City Bakery and lived at 795 S 22nd. He soon found better employment as a weaver at TKWM but left shortly after 1935.
Thirty-one-year-old Detrick married 21year-old Dorothy Emma Johnson on 17 Sep 1938 in McMinnville, OR and they lived in the county for some time. By 1940, the couple had a daughter and had moved to Brownsville, OR where they rented a home and Detrick worked for the Brownsville Mill. When mother Anna died in1943, Detrick and family lived in Valley Junction, OR, near the current Grand Ronde.
From there, we lose track of Derick until his divorce from Emma on 23 Dec 1982 in Lane County, OR. Derick then spent some time California and passed away in Las Vegas, NV on 6 Feb 1998 at age 81. We find no record of his burial. |
