Life Story

Effie Susan (Reed) Wright worked at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill as a finisher. City directories list her working there in 1905 and 1911.

Effie Susan Reed was born 16 Oct 1866 outside of Roseburg, around Oakland, Douglas County, OR. Her parents were Samuel Reed and Emma Augusta (Slocum) Reed, both Oregon pioneers. Effie had an older brother, Collins Lee Reed. Effie’s father died before she was one year old. Effie’s mother married William Henry Byars on 23 Dec 1868. Emma had known him since they were teenagers, they lived a long life and had six more children together. He was the only father Effie ever knew.

William H Byars was a remarkable man and accomplished many things. Among them he was Roseburg Plain Dealer’s editor and publisher. He was elected state printer in 1882 and moved the family to Salem. He bought half interest in the Salem Statesman and ran it for two years. He was one of the men who established the Capital Journal. Effie’s stepfather went on to be elected city engineer of Salem and was later appointed by President Harrison surveyor general of Oregon.

Effie worked as a printer at the Capital Journal when she was young. She attended Willamette University and graduated from the Conservatory of Music in 1887. The following year she married Addison Huston Wright. Addison had health issues so around 1888 they moved up to Mehama, OR hoping it might ease his tuberculosis. Effie and Ad had four children; Joseph Addison, Emma Catherine, Stephen Elmo and Vera Mae. Unfortunately, nothing would keep the TB at bay and Addison died from the disease 3 Feb 1904.

Effie was a widow at age 39, with four children. In 1905 she moved her children back to Salem and took work at the TKWM as a finisher. She also found time to be heavily involved in community organizations like the Women’s Relief Corp. She also worked as a private nurse. And was listed back as a finisher at the Woolen Mill in 1911.

On 7 Jul 1912 Effie married for the second time, Clayton C. Unruh. Clayton was a farmer from Yamhill County. The couple lived on the farm the summer they were married, then moved back to Salem to their new home at 1609 Currant Ave. Unfortunately, on 3 Mar 1915 Clayton Unruh dropped dead from a heart attack while waiting for a train. They had been married less than three years. After her second husband’s death, Effie moved back into her home on 1311 North Fourth St in Salem; her daughter Vera with her. The other children were grown and on their own.

On 25 Aug 1916 Effie married for the third time to John Franklin “Frank” Dunlap. He was a stock buyer. They lived a quiet life, at her home in Salem until his death on 11 Jun 1927. After being widowed once again, Effie resumed work as a private nurse. She remained very involved with the Woman’s Relief Corp, the Jason Lee Aid Society and other community groups. Eventually she sold her home on Oak St and moved to the Methodist Old People Home on Center St. She passed away there from a heart attack on 21 Sep 1945. Her two daughters, Mrs. Emma C. Drake and Vera Mae Given and her two sons J. A. Wright and Stephen Elmo Wright survived her. She was buried at City View Cemetery in Salem alongside her first husband Addison H. Wright.
