          Emil Johannes Roth was born February 1872 in Canton Neuchatel, Switzerland to John and Anna RothThe family arrived in the U.S. in 1885 and settled in Kansas for five years before moving to Oregon in about 1890Father John died just prior to 1896 when Emil appears in the Salem City Directory as a weaver at TKWM 

          Emil left TKWM in 1900 to join his brother Theodore and two friends Joe and Peter Graber, to form the Roth & Graber GroceryThis venture grew to become Roth Grocery and later Willamette Grocery Company, businesses that exist to this day.  Emil married Katherine Reddekopp in 1903 and they had three children, Alice, Carlton, and EdwardThe couple lived at 1113 N Cottage 

          Emil remained in the grocery business until his death in 1939. He died as a result of an accidental ammonia explosion while dismantling a refrigeration plant in one of the company’s grocery stores in Lebanon, ORHe is buried at Belcrest Memorial Park, in Salem, OR.  

          Katherine eventually remarried and passed away in 1970 at age 89She is buried at Belcrest Memorial under the name Katherine Reddekopp Dewytt.

Newspapers.com  Oregon Statesman 31 Jan 1900 p 8  DISPOSED OF BUSINESS – H.G. Sonnemann, who has been engaged in the grocery business in this city for ten years, yesterday disposed of his business to a quartet of Salem’s enterprising young German citizens who took possession yesterday and will conduct the business under the firm name of Roth & Graber. The new firm consists of Theo and Emil Roth, Peter, and Joe Graber. Mr. Sonnemann left on the California express last evening for Southern Oregon, where he will look the field over and determine upon a favorable location, when he will again engage in business. 

Capital Journal 30 Aug 1939 p 12  Emil J. Roth Succumbs to Recent Injury. “Emil J. Roth 67, long identified with the business life of Salem, died in the Lebanon hospital late Tuesday afternoon from injuries received Sunday from an ammonia explosion which occurred when Roth was assisting in dismantling a refrigeration plant in a Lebanon store. 

Emil Roth was born in Canton Neuchatel, Switzerland, February 8, 1872, the son of Mr. And Mrs. John Roth. With his family he came to the states in 1885 and after living in Kansas for five years they  moved to Oregon. 

For several years he served as a weaver in the Kay Woolen mills. In 1900 he joined his brother, Theodore Roth, in forming the Roth Grocery company. Out of this business grew the Willamette Grocery company, with which Mr. Roth was connected at the time of his death. 

In 1903 he was married to Miss Katherine Reddekopp, who survives him. Their three children are Mrs. Russell Pratt, Carlton, and Edward Roth, all of Salem. Other survivors include the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Eloise Stettler, John Roth, William Roth, Mrs. Mary Broger, Mrs. Alice Wenger, Theodore Roth, Mrs. Bertha Barnett, all of Salem, Mrs. Rosalie Rich of Orenco and Charles Roth of The Dalles. 

Services will be held from the Calvary Baptist church at 2:30 o’clock Thursday afternoon with Rev. Arno Q. Weniger officiating. Interment will be in the Belcrest Memorial Park. Clough-Barrick company is in charge of arrangements. 

Mr. Roth had been an exceptionally active member of the Calvary Baptist church and was much interested in the construction of the recently completed church.” 

Capital Journal 13 February 1970 p 13 Mrs. Demytt Died Thursday “Mrs. Katherine Demytt, 89, the mother of former Salem Councilman Edward L. Roth, died Thursday at her home, 1955 Dallas Road NW. Mrs. Demytt lived in Salem since 1898. She was a native of Manitoba, Canada. Surviving besides Edward Roth are another son, Carleton L. Roth; a daughter, Mrs. Russell Pratt, both of Salem, and six grandchildren. Services are pending at the Barrick Funeral Home.”
