Story  Fred William Lehman worked at TKWM from 1917 as a weaver then supervisor until his death in 1939.

Fred’s German emigrant parents, August (1866-1936) and Anna (1867-1964) Lehman arrived in the U.S. in 1891 and settled in Oregon.  August became a funeral director in Salem but later worked for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill.  Fred was born on 30 Mar 1896 and by 1900 the family was living in Yew Park.

In 1917, Fred took work as a weaver at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill, alongside family members. The Lehman family lived at 1740 Oxford St in Salem. Fred married Hulda Ronner on 10 Apr 1920 in Salem.  Hulda was also a weaver at TKWM.  She was born in Switzerland and immigrated to the U.S. in 1914.  Although she spoke English, her primary language was German.  After their wedding, the couple took up residence at 595 S 17th and lived there until Fred’s passing.

By 1930, Fred and Hulga had added daughter Marguerite to the family and Fred was a “Boss Weaver” at TKWM.   In 1932, Hulga went back to TKWM as a weaver for a short time but left again when she was pregnant with their second daughter, Alice Ethel.

Fred died suddenly on 14 Dec 1939 after suffering a heart attack at his home.  He is buried at Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem. After his death Hulda went back to work at TKWM to make ends meet. Hulda died at age 96 in Portland, OR. She was buried alongside Fred in Belcrest Memorial Park.
