George Donaldson worked at TKWM from 1903 to 1947 along with his brothers. He began in the Dye House and later moved to the Carding Room.
George John Donaldson was born in Sweden on 23 Apr 1875 to parents Carl J (John) and Carolina [Peterson] Donaldson. He was the eldest of six children born to the couple. The family immigrated to the United States in late summer 1887. They settled first in Stillwater, Minnesota where father John had obtained employment. They moved further west, to Dallas, Oregon by 1888.
In 1892 his father John passed away and George took work as a day laborer to provide an income for the family. He was joined by his brothers as they matured. The family moved to Salem by 1905. George and his brothers took work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. He started in the Dye House with his brother Emil.
George married Amanda Elizabeth Hagstedt on 17 Dec 1913 in Salem, OR. The couple had no children. Amanda died of pulmonary tuberculosis in 1920, she had been sick for two years prior. She was buried at City View Cemetery in Salem. George then married Martha Gunderson on 18 Feb 1929 in Vancouver, Washington. Martha had two sons from her first marriage: Gilbert and Carl. Then George and Martha had a daughter of their own, Alta Florence.
George was a member of the Woodmen of the World and played for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill baseball team. He worked for the mill for over 30 years, first in the Dye House and later the Carding Room. George died 17 March 1948 in Salem Memorial Hospital from congestive heart failure. At the time of his death, he was 72 years old. He was buried in City View Cemetery. |
