Story  James Maplethorpe worked for TKWM when it opened in 1891 and continued through about 1918.

James A. Maplethorpe was born on 10 Mar 1868 in England and immigrated to the U.S. with his family in 1878. His family moved around a bit but by about 1890, James and his brother Thomas were living in Salem. By 1893 James was a carder at TKWM and Thomas was a shoemaker.

In 1891, James married Sadie (Sarah) Osborn in Salem. By 1900, the couple was living in Dallas and had four children. James was a spinner at a woolen mill, possibly in Dallas, but most likely TKWM because by 1905, he was a foreman there.

James remained at TKWM until about 1918 when he moved his family to Long Beach, CA and took a job at a new woolen mill there. By 1920, only his daughter Lucile remained at home. By 1930, James had left his woolen mill career and took up poultry farming near Escondido, CA. Sadly, his wife Sarah passed away in 1934 and soon after, James retired to begin living with his daughter Eva.

In 1952, James moved to Carson City, NV to live with another of his children and five years later, he passed away at age 90. He is buried at Lone Mountain Cemetery, Carson City, NV.
