James E Welch worked for TKWM as a weaver from 1905 – 1917.
James Edward Welch was born Daniel F and Mary Ann [Bellen] Welch on 30 Jan 1874 in Worcester, Massachusetts. He was one of five children born to the couple. His father worked in the woolen mill industry in Massachusetts and later Connecticut. By 1900, Edward had left the family and made his way to Oregon. He worked as a weaver. We find him at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in 1910.
He married Laura Rebecca McAllister 11 June 1907 in Portland, OR. They were the parents of one child. He moved his family to Long Beach, CA for work at the Golden State Woolen Mill in 1917. He also worked for the U.S. Army during WWI as a textile inspector at the local Army Depot. The couple took in boarders to help ends meet during the 1920s.
Tragically, son Curtis Edward was killed in England during service in WWII (22 Oct 1944). Edward died at his home in Long Beach on 29 Sep 1946. Laura followed him, 8 Jan 1947. They are buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles, CA. |
