StoryĀ  Jay Yarnell worked as a spinner at TKWM from 1930 -1963. After the mill closed, he moved to the Jefferson Woolen Mill.Ā

Jay Noah Yarnell was born 9 Jun 1899 in McConnellsville, OH to John Harvey and Hannah [Coulson] Yarnell. At age 19 his draft registration card documents his work at the Washougal Woolen Mill, despite the fact that his family lived in Salem. Shortly after, Jay returned to Salem and tried a number of odd jobs including a stint at Spaulding Lumber. He was employed there when he married Fleta M Caspell 11 Jun 1922. The couple would have three sons: Edward J, Leonard L, and Glen D. All three of which would serve in WWII.Ā

Jay came to the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill a bit later in life than other employees he worked with. He joined the Spinning Dept in 1930, at the age of 30. Wife Fleta died in Dec 1948. Jay then married Alice Lindsay. After 33 years of work Jay left TKWM and moved to the Jefferson Woolen Mill. Jay died 27 Aug 1979 in Salem and was buried in Belcrest Memorial Park. Wife Alice joined him in 1989.
