Remarks            John Lindsay worked as a weaver at TKWM for a brief time in 1892 – 1893.

John Lindsay was born in April 1869 to James and Mary Lindsay.  The family emigrated from England in 1876 and settled in Canemah, near Oregon City by 1880. Father James worked as a weaver at the Oregon City Woolen Mill. John joined him at the mill by 1890. In April 1892 newspapers reported an altercation between John and the boss weaver at OCWM that resulted in an employee strike. At this time John comes briefly to the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in Salem.

The 1900 federal census records John living back with his parents in Canemah and working as a day laborer. And at this point we lose track of him until the report of his death at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Portland on 14 June 1912. He was working as a day laborer on the Albina dock when he collapsed from chest pain and was rushed to the hospital where he later died. He was survived by his parents and brother Thomas. He was buried in the family plot in Canemah Cemetery.

OREGON CITY, April 1. –The employees of the weaving room in the Oregon City Manufacturing Company’s woolen mill, to the number of about fifty, went out on a strike this morning. The employees have for some months been dissatisfied with Boss Weaver Haigh, and he is just now figuring in an adultery suit as correspondent with Mrs. S. Rixenstein, which caused considerable talk. To this, he objected, and this morning discharged one of the girls employed. She appealed to one of the managers who told her to go to work again. The boss weaver threw the belt off from her loom twice, and this led to a fight between he and John Lindsay, in which the latter had the best of it. This incident precipitated the immediate discharge of the boss weaver. This the manager refused to accede to but has given till Monday for the hands to return.
