Life Story

Lottie Gilson worked in the weaving department at TKWM along with husband Phillip H. Fisher.

Lottie was born 10 June 1885 in Bethel, Polk County, OR. Her parents were Lucius B. and Frances May [Walling] Denny. Her father was a farmer in Polk County. Her mother died when she was eight years old, and Lottie was sent to the Glen Oak Orphans Home in Asylum Ave. in Salem. She attended school until the 5th grade.

She took a job at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill around the turn of the century. Then she married fellow millworker Philip Fisher in the Lutheran Christus Church, Salem, OR on 22 June 1902. They would become parents of three daughters, Esther, Dorothy and Viola. Both Philip and Lottie worked at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. They met in the weaving department at the mill.

Lottie was a mother and homemaker while her children grew, though she went back briefly to the woolen mill in the mid-1920s to supplement the family income. Her husband Philip worked for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill for over 30 years, until retirement. He left briefly in 1911 and again in the mid-1920s to pursue side business but returned to millwork after each. He worked primarily in the weaving department. In September 1934 he served as the president of the local union for woolen textile workers during a critical point in the local history of unionization. He led the negotiations with mill management during a strike.

Husband Philip died in April 1954 following an illness of about 8 months. Lottie died of heart disease at the age of 84, on 28 July 1969. Both were buried in City View Cemetery in Salem, OR.
