Life Story

Marguerite Meyer worked for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill from about 1900-1910.  She held multiple positions at the mill.

Marguerite was born 19 Aug 1885 in Albany, OR. Her parents were William F. and Henrietta (Mineko) Meyer. Her father was an Oregon pioneer and Civil War veteran. She had four siblings. Two sisters, Mary E (Meyer) Walker and Lena (Meyer) Wright. And two brothers, Fred Henry Meyer and Seymour H Meyer.

In 1900, according to city directories, Maggie worked as a finisher at TKWM. Her brother, Fred Meyer and her sister Lena’s husband, Daniel Perry Wright were spinners. Marguerite worked as a weaver from 1907 until at least 1910. She was a very close friend of another mill worker, Mrs. Ida May Rollo. They lived, worked and vacationed together throughout this time of her life.

By 1912 Marguerite had left the mill work and become a clerk. She worked for the Secretary of State by 1912. An article lists her as a guest of Secretary of State Ben Olcott at an annual dinner he hosted to thank his office force in December of 1912. She worked there for many years, last reference to her job there was in 1924 but it could have been longer.

On 29 Mar 1927, at age 41, Marguerite married Edgar Frank Yeaton. They were wed in Shelton, Mason, Washington but made their home in Salem, OR most of their lives. Their Marriage Return certificate listed her as a stenographer. There were no children from this marriage or Edgar’s prior marriage.

The couple moved to Vancouver, WA in 1942 but they were in Portland, OR by 1943. Marguerite became ill in 1943 and spent the last four months of her life at the Lincoln Sanitarium. She passed away there on 14 Oct 1943.  She was cremated and no burial site has been found for her.

Marguerite’s husband Edgar died on 18 Apr 1946 near Brady, Grays Harbor, Washington and is presumed buried in Montesano, Washington. Edgar’s brother George is buried there and it appears Edgar spent his last days in WA with his brother.
