Mary Margaret White worked for the TKWM sporadically during summer holidays while she was in high school and later college. Both her parents and sister, also worked for the mill.
Mary Margaret White was born 13 August 1913 in Salem, Oregon to Gilbert & Myra [Dalby] White. She had one older sibling, Muriel Joy White. The family had lived in Salem since 1912 when Mary’s father took a job at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. Gilbert White was a wool grader. The family lived in a series of rental homes near the mill until building a home at 1740 Ferry St. When Mary was 4 years old, her mother Myra went to work at the Woolen Mill in order to save money for the family to build their own home. It took seven years. Both Mary and her sister Muriel attended Salem Public Schools. Mary graduated from Salem High School in 1930, then followed her sister to Willamette University. She was active in the following clubs and societies: Willamette Wesleyans, International Club, Alpha Phi Alpha Sorority, Pep Club, Big Sister, and the Collegian Yearbook. And played the following sports: soccer, baseball, volleyball, tennis, hiking, and basketball. She graduated from Willamette University in 1934 with a degree in Education.
After college Mary took a position in the advertising department of the local newspaper office, the Oregon Statesman. She continued to live at home with her parents. She worked for the Statesman Publishing Company as a saleswoman in the advertising department for her entire career, until retirement in 1975. Her adult hobbies, according to her obituary, were traveling and flower gardening. Mary died 13 July 1994 in Salem, Oregon. She is buried in Belcrest Memorial Park with her parents. |
