May McAllister worked for TKWM as a spooler in 1900. Sisters Myrtle and Laura also worked at TKWM.
May Anna McAllister was born 11 May 1881 in Oregon to John M and Melinda [Townsend] McAllister. She was one of eleven children born to the couple. She attended public school in Salem and went to work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. She married Robert R. Crum, a waiter at the Wonder Restaurant in Salem, on 7 Oct 1900. They spent a few days in Albany for a wedding or honeymoon trip before returning to Salem. Robert worked a series of jobs in Salem in restaurants, tried his hand at farming, and settled into a cigar shop on State St. until his untimely death in 1927. The couple were parents to four children. Tragically, only son Lester died 16 July 1922 after a drowning accident in the Willamette River.
After her husband Robert’s death Anna took work as a janitress for First National Bank in Salem. She remarried on 10 Sep 1932 to Austin A Derthick, a widower from Dufur. Sadly, he died on the 23 Nov of the same year. He was buried next to his first wife in Kelly Cemetery in Maupin, OR. Anna returned to Salem with her girls. She died 8 Jan 1937 in Salem and was buried in Salem Pioneer Cemetery. |
