Myra was born March 28, 1884, in Bradford, Yorkshire, England to Herbert and Mary Ann Barker. She was an English lass descended from millworkers, 5’6 inches tall with a light complexion, gray eyes and brown hair. She emigrated to America in the early 1900s and went to work in a woolen mill in Providence, Rhode Island. It was here that she married Gilbert White, an Englishman from her hometown and fellow millworker. They were married April 4, 1907, in Providence. Two daughters were born to the couple: Muriel Joy and Mary Margaret. 

The family came to Salem, Oregon in 1912 to work for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. Myra stayed home with their daughters until Mary Margaret was 4 years old. Then she went to work at TKWM as a burler in the finishing department so that the family could save enough to build their own home. She stayed for seven years. When the girls were high school and college age, they often worked summers at the Mill.  

Gilbert worked for 32 years as a wool sorter, later foreman in the wool room. He retired in 1947. He died April 24, 1955, the result of a heart attack. He was buried at Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem. Myra lived until her 90th birthday, passing away on the day itself, in a local nursing home. She was buried beside Gilbert at Belcrest.
