Rose was born 3 Sep 1886 in Oregon to parents Christian and Anna (Ries) Kaufman. She was one of eight children born to the couple. Rose was on the first-grade honor roll at North school in 1895 and was still in school in the 1900 census. 

By 1910 her brother John was a finisher at the Woolen Mill in Eugene and Jacob was a spinner at the Woolen Mill in Pendleton. Joseph remained in Salem in 1910 as a carder. By 1920 Jacob was a spinner at the mill in Washougal, WA.  

In 1905, at the age of 19 Rose was listed as a spooler at the mill. By 1907 she was a finisher and she continued working there until her marriage in 1913. Rose married Amil Theodore Witte on 12 Aug 1913 at the home of her parents on North Capital St in Salem, OR. The newly married couple began their life in their new home at 1140 Hood St.  

On 24 Mar 1916 Rose sued for divorce, with Amil suffering from a loathsome and incurable disease. She was granted an annulment on 19 Jun 1916. Her maiden name of Kaufman was restored. Amil was pronounced incompetent and committed to the Oregon State Hospital for the Insane 16 Nov 1916. It appears he remained there for a number of years.  

During the short time of her marriage, Rose left the mill. She worked at the Capital City Steam Laundry as an ironer, a folder, and a mangler. Rose returned to the mill by 1920 and is listed as a spooler there in 1935.  

There was little sign of Amil Witte during those years. Evidently, he was helped and returned to Salem. He and Rose Kaufman married once again on 14 Jun 1934. Amil passed away on 6 May 1938 in Salem. Amil T Witte is buried by his mother Sophia Witte and sister Ida (Witte) Seymour in Salem’s Pioneer Cemetery.  

The 1940 census lists Rose as widowed and a servant for the John D Mickle family. She is 54 years old and living with the family in Salem. John D Mickle was the Superintendent of the State of Agriculture. Mickle retired in 1943 and moved to Portland. 

Rose’s obituary says she retired from the Woolen Mill. Rose spent her later years at the United Methodist Home in Salem. She passed away 27 Feb 1984. Rose Kaufman Witte is buried at City View Cemetery. No marker has been found for either Amil or Rose Witte’s graves.
