Job(s) at TKWM Burler, Finisher
Life Story

Sarah Elizabeth “Sadie” Smith worked at the TKWM by 1893, maybe earlier. She was a burler. It’s likely she met her future husband, Claire Joel Howe at the mill. He worked in the finishing department. Sadie’s brother William H. Smith also worked at the TKWM as a dryer and a finisher.

Sarah Elizabeth Smith was born in Oregon on 10 Sep 1870 to parents Francis Marion and Mahala (McCallister) Smith. Both of her parents are listed as early Oregonians. The family was living in Table Rock, Jackson County, Oregon in the 1860 census and in Union Town, Jackson County, Oregon in the 1880 census. Her father was a trapper and a miner.

Sarah was one of nine children, five boys and four girls, all born in Jackson County, Oregon. The family moved from there to Salem, Oregon before 1888. A notice in the Statesman Journal on 23 Mar 1888 gives judgement against Frank M Smith for debts owed and his property sold. On 27 Sep 1901, at the family’s home on Waller and 17th St in Salem, OR Sarah’s father committed suicide. He was distraught over gambling debts. His wife Mahala would live another fourteen years. Both parents are buried at City View Cemetery in Salem, OR.

Sarah Elizabeth “Sadie” Smith married Claire Joel Howe on 10 Dec 1895 at the home of Bud Chapman, with only immediate family present. Their marriage announcement in the Statesman Journal mentioned they were among the employees of the Salem woolen mill, holding lucrative positions prior to its destruction by fire a few weeks before their wedding. The couple moved into a little cottage on Sixteenth street following their nuptials. The cottage had been placed in readiness by the groom.

Nothing found on Sadie working outside of the home after their marriage. Sadie’s husband, C. J. Howe, worked at the TKWM for 15 years. On 20 Feb 1906 articles of incorporation were filed in the county clerk’s office incorporating the Eugene Woolen Mill Co. The incorporators were T. B. Kay, E. Koppe, Arthur W. Lord and C. J. Howe. Claire Joel Howe moved his family to Eugene and became a foreman at the Eugene Woolen Mill in 1906. He later became vice president of that mill and spent the rest of his working life there. He retired in 1949.

Claire and Sadie Howe raised four children. Their oldest daughter, Edith Edna (Howe) Butt was born in Salem in 1903. The next three children were all born in Eugene, OR. A son, Eugene Claire Howe, born in 1906; and two more daughters, Grace Gladys (Howe) Wilson born in 1909, and Lois Mildred (Howe) McDonald born in 1913.

Sarah Elizabeth “Sadie” passed on 5 Oct 1958 in Springfield, Lane County, Oregon, at the age of 88. Her husband, Claire Joel Howe passed away six years earlier, on 23 Mar 1952 at the age of 79. They are buried at the Rest Haven Memorial Park in Eugene, Lane County, Oregon.
