Story  Samuel Wright and his father William worked for TKWM when it first opened in 1890. Samuel was manager of the Picker machine.

Samuel M Wright was born in Indiana on 8 Feb 1871 to William and Lydia (Green) Wright. In Oct 1878, Samuel and his parents and siblings moved to Salem where his father William (also known as Billy) was a laborer.

Samuel was hired to work in the dye department of TKWM when it opened in 1890. He continued working as a dyer for about three years. Then in 1893, he moved to the carding department. When the mill burned down in Nov 1895, Samuel was one of the two people in the mill that night. He was employed in several capacities according to the article about the fire. Near the end of his career in 1930, he was a wool grader.

Samuel’s father William was the night watchman for TKWM when it opened, but he was there less than two years. Samuel’s brother Daniel Perry Wright also worked at the mill from 1891 until at least 1910, maybe 1915.

Samuel was married for the first time in Dec 1904. He and his wife Winne suffered a tragedy when their baby boy died at the age of 2 months while Samuel & Winnie were traveling by wagon to CA. They had stopped to camp by the bridge close to Eugene when the baby died.

By 1907, Samuel and Winnie had divorced, and he moved back in with his father William. In 1914, Samuel married a second time to the widow Jennie Quinn, eleven years his senior.

Samuel worked at TKWM for close to 40 years and then moved to a small property outside Turner, OR. He died on 16 Sep 1931 leaving his elderly father William and wife Jennie.
