Event Origin & History

Music on street corners, parks, rooftops, gardens, and storefronts was the vision that started Fête De La Musique – meaning “festival of music” and “make music” – 40 years ago in Paris, FranceThe French Ministry of Culture created the event to fill the city with music!

Another unique component of this event is that everyone was welcome to join and perform their music! So it was for more than just professionals because anyone can be a musician.

Over the 40 years,  Fête De La Musique grew into a national holiday in France. The musicians take over the country every summer solstice (June 21) to celebrate.

Fifteen years ago,  Fête De La Musique jumped the pond and debuted in New York through the work of a team of volunteers.

As of 2022, 104 cities organized 3,819 free concerts – Salem, OR, had over 100 in one day!

So if you are a musician, share it with the world – or Salem, at least!
Any age and any genre are welcome!
