Life Story

Charles Campbell worked at TKWM sporadically in the early 1900s as a general laborer. Brothers Arno, Roy, and John Jr. and his parents John and Milia also worked at the mill.

Charles Wilbert Campbell was born 11 Oct 1885 in the city of Hespeler, Canada to John Richard and Milia [Connawarf] Campbell. Father John worked in the woolen mills of Waterloo. The couple had four sons. The family immigrated to the U.S. in 1900 and brought grandmother Susan Campbell with them. They moved to Dallas, OR where both Charles and father John Sr. worked in the Ellendale woolen mill.

In 1905 when other family members moved to Salem to work for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill, Charles, age 26, and brother Arno, age 22, moved to Breitenbush in the Santiam Canyon to work as loggers for a lumber mill. The 1910 census record indicates that they were partners in the lumber mill venture.

Charles married Katura Zoe Hinkle on 23 Nov 1911. The groom was employed with Barr plumbing firm and the bride a recent arrival from Pennsylvania. He was 26 years old and his bride 18. They were married by the Rev. H. T. Babcock of the First Presbyterian Church in the home of Charles’ parents. The couple divorced in Sep 1915; no children were born from the union.

Charles’ WWI draft registration card dated 12 Sep 1918 gave his physical description as medium height with a slender build, brown hair and brown eyes. His employer was B.J. Mackall in Fresno, California. His present occupation, a general machine worker. He was 34 years old and married to Bertha Campbell. He had married her on 29 Apr 1918 in Fresno. At the time of their marriage, he was 33 and Bertha was 16.

In 1920, census data recorded that the couple lived with mother-in-law Ella Green in Klamath Falls, OR. Bertha would have been pregnant with their first child, Madge. The couple may have moved to be close to Bertha’s mother in anticipation of the birth and help needed after. Charles returned to California the following year; Bertha joined him later after second daughter Wilberta was born.

Bertha’s mother joined them in California in 1930.  Charles continued to work as a mechanic in the rock and gravel industry. They rented their home at 577 North Orange St. In Orange, CA $26 a month. Two years later Bertha died on 2 May 1932 in Orange, CA. She was 30 years old. Charles left the children in the care of his mother-in-law and returned to his parents in Salem. He worked for the C.S. Hamilton furniture store. Tragically, he died 12 Mar 1937 of a heart attack while walking home from work; his body was found off Mill Creek near 13th St. He was 51 years old. Parents John and Milia had his body sent back to Orange, CA to be buried alongside his wife Bertha, in the Santa Ana Cemetery.
