Life Story

Roy Campbell worked at TKWM briefly in the early 1920s. Parents John and Milia as well as brothers Charles, Arno, and John Jr. also worked at the mill.

Roy Ferguson Campbell was born 1 July 1893 In the city of Hespeler, Canada where his father worked in the Waterloo woolen mills. His parents were John Richard and Milia [Connawarf] Campbell. The family immigrated to the U.S. in 1900 along with paternal grandmother Susan Campbell. They came first to Dallas, OR where father John and brother Charles worked for the woolen mill.

In 1905, Roy and brother John moved to Salem with their parents for an employment opportunity at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. Roy was 12 years old and John 14. Five years later according to the 1910 census, he worked as a driver for a meat wagon. He was 17 years old and still lived in his parent’s household.

On June 5, 1917, Roy filled out his WWI draft registration card. His physical description was similar to his brothers. He was medium height with a medium build. His hair was brown and so were his eyes. His occupation was streetcar motorman for the Southern Pacific Railroad Co. in Salem, OR. He was 26 years old and considered an alien citizen of Great Britain by nature of his birth in Canada. He was married at this point and counted a wife as a dependent. They lived with his parents at 1160 S. 12th St. in Salem, OR.

Roy made the decision to enlist in the Canadian Army in September 1917. His wife Hattie accompanied him to Toronto, Canada and remained while he served overseas. By Nov 1918, according to a Salem newspaper article, he was stationed in North Wales. He was discharged in July 1919 and returned to Salem. There is no mention of Hattie, his wife.

Roy and brother John R. were listed in their parents’ household in the 1920 census. Both men were single, and John and his parents worked for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. It is at this point in time that Roy was briefly recorded in mill payroll records. Roy then visited his brother Charles in Fresno, California. While there he met Ida Maxine Pena, the birth mother of his daughter Zilpha. After the birth of Zilpha in 1924, Roy returned to Salem with her, and worked for the Charles Spaulding Lumber Mill. At the time of research, solid evidence had not been found to indicate a marriage had taken place and following Zilpha’s birth, Ida married another man and remained in California.

On 1 Oct 1927, Roy married Lucy Gunn in Vancouver, WA. He was 34 years old and worked as a box-maker in Salem, OR. Lucy was 41 years old. It is of interest to note that the addresses given on their marriage application, were two homes next door to each other on 14th St. in Salem, OR. Lucy lived at 430 and Roy with his parents at 450. Following their marriage, they lived at 430 S 14th St. and raised two daughters, Zilpha and Luella.

By 1930, Roy continued to work as a box maker in a box factory. He maintained his Canadian citizenship. He and Lucy owned their home and his elderly parents lived next door. Mother-in-law Charity Gunn lived with the couple until her death.

In 1940, the census recorded that Roy’s wife Lucy had returned to the workforce as a secretary at the State Library, a WPA funded government position. Zilpha and Luella lived at home and attended school. Roy worked as a wholesale salesman for a private company, the name of which was not recorded on the census record. Daughter Zilpha married in 1943, her husband Frank Jaskoski was a fellow graduate of Salem High School, who had enlisted in the navy for service during World War II.

By the 1950 census, Roy worked as a manager for a beverage distribution company. He was 56 years old. Wife Lucy at 63, continued to work as a clerk-typist at the State Library. Daughter Luella, age 20, lived at home and worked as a clerk-typist for the Secretary of State’s office. Roy’s mother Milia, age 88, moved in with the couple.

Roy died 20 Mar 1965 in Salem, OR at the age of 71. His cause of death was lung cancer. His wife Lucy died 28 Apr 1981 in Dallas, OR. Both are buried in Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem.
