Life Story

Dean Allport worked for TKWM from 1948 – 1950 as a spinner. There is also a time book reference for June 1943. His father and other family members also worked for the mill.

Dean Carl Allport was born 25 Jan 1927 in Salem, Oregon to Carl Oscar and Roberta May [Hansen] Allport. He was one of two children born to the couple. He attended Salem public schools and graduated from Salem High School. He was a talented musician whose oboe playing earned superior ratings at a regional music contest in 1942.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War 2. The Capital Journal newspaper dated 8 Oct 1945 reported that, “Dean Allport, Mus. 3/ U.S.N., just came to the west coast after studying six months at the navy school of music in Washington D.C. He is now stationed in San Bruno in the 137th navy band. Mr. Allport played the oboe in high school band and orchestra and is a graduate of Salem High school this year.”

In 1948 after a military discharge, he came back to Salem and worked for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill as a spinner. While working at the mill, Dean also enrolled in business college classes. He married Sharon Coover on 7 May 1948 in Salem, OR but by December, she had filed for divorce on the grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment. The divorce was granted in January 1949.

Dean then married Patricia Ann Hale 14 Oct 1950 in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Salem, OR. They were the parents of five children, four daughters and one son – Deborah, Kathleen, Elizabeth, Cynthia, and Randy Dean. In 1955 they purchased a new home at 3365 Crestview Dr. in South Salem. Dean was employed by First National Bank at the time.

After their first three daughters were born, the family moved to California for Dean’s work. They would remain in California for 16 years and live in Corcoran, West Covina, and Elmonte. They returned to Salem in July 1973 and leased a home on Woodacre Dr. Their two youngest children Cynthia and Randall still lived with them. Patricia took a job with the City of Salem Equipment Division. She would remain with them for 21 years, retiring in 1994.

Dean’s wife Patricia died 26 Jul 2003 in West Salem, at the age of 73. Dean died 2 Jan 2017 at age 89, in Keizer, OR. He was buried in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, OR.
