Life Story 

 

Donald B. Allport worked at TKWM from 1937-1939 and came back again in August 1943 to help during a busy season. He worked as a spinner along with other family members. 

Donald Bernard Allport was born 12 Aug 1915 in Portland, OR to Norman Lewis and Augusta Carolina [Donaldson] Allport. He was one of ten children born to the family. His father was a master spinner that worked in the woolen industry, primarily for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. Donald attended public schools in Salem and Provo, Utah where his family moved in 1920. His father had accepted the job of foreman of the Knight Woolen Mill. 

The family returned to Salem in 1924 and the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. Donald finished his education and after his father’s death in 1930, went to work along with other family members to help support their family. His mother Augusta worked as a weaver, while the boys followed their father’s footsteps into the carding department. Donald worked at the mill from 1937-1939 and returned in August 1943 to help during a busy season. 

Donald married Ruth M. Disbrow 16 Aug 1937 in Vancouver, WA. They were the parents of four children: Donna, Betty, Norma and Lucille. They would divorce in 1954. 

Donald enlisted in the Army on 18 Feb 1944 and served in World War 2. He served in the Coast Artillery, Anti-Aircraft units. At the time of enlistment his registration card gave his physical description. His height was 5’7 and weight 150 lbs. His complexion was ruddy, hair brown and eyes gray. A Salem newspaper article from 5 May 1948 reported the following, “Sgt. Don Allport, who has been in the army about six years, is home in Salem on furlough. He has served recently in Korea and is now stationed in Seattle.” 

Following his military service, he remained in Seattle, WA. Then on 27 Mar 1978 he married Jewel E. Bistor. Donald died 23 Apr 1994 in Portland, OR. He was buried in Willamette National Cemetery.
