Don Meithof worked as a carder at TKWM from 1947-1950 along with other Meithof family members.
Donald L. Meithof was born on 8 June 1929, in West Timber, Oregon, to John J. and Marie [Blum] Meithof. He was the eldest of seven children born to the couple. His father worked in the timber industry before becoming a farmer in the Quinaby area of Marion County. Donald attended Buena Crest School through eighth grade and continued helping on his father’s farm even after his parents divorced in 1945. By 1947, he had moved to Salem to work alongside his mother and siblings at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill.
On 2 July 1949, Donald married Virginia Carda at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Salem. After a honeymoon at the beach, they settled into their new home at 557 N. 21st St. in Salem. The groom was 20 years old and worked as a carder at the woolen mill. His bride was 18 and worked as a clerk-stenographer. Prior to marriage, her home was just a few doors down from his on Cottage St.
In the early 1950s, Donald and Virginia moved to Harrisburg, Oregon, where they purchased Harrisburg Lockers, a butcher and meat locker business. On 7 Feb 1967, the couple divorced, finalizing the paperwork in Linn County, Oregon. At the time, they were in their thirties and had three children. The listed cause of divorce was cruelty. However, on 31 Oct 1970, they remarried in Carson City, Nevada.
Virginia passed away in Feb 1982 in Portland, Oregon, after a battle with cancer. At the time, the family was living in Harrisburg. She was laid to rest in Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem. Donald L. Meithof died on 2 July 2021 in Stayton, Oregon. He was also buried in Belcrest Memorial Park. |
