Story  George Noack worked at TKWM in various capacities from 1910 – 1960.

George Alvin Noack was born 21 Oct 1893 or 1894 to George Sr. And Mary Noack in Vicksburg, TX. Various primary source documents report his birth year as either 1893 or 1894. In an oral history interview for Mission Mill Museum, he gave the date as 1894. He also stated that the family moved to Oregon when he was 2 years old. No independent confirmation of this move was found at the time of research. He was one of five children born to the couple. All three Noack brothers, George, Paul and John worked for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill at various points of time.

In 1907, Father George Sr. died. The older children went to work to support the family. George began working for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill as a weaver, by 1910. By age 16 he had moved to the carding department and would continue to work for TKWM until it ceased operation. A typical workday at the mill in 1910 was 10-hour days, six days a week. The pay was 75 cents a day.

George married Ethel Barnes on 12 Feb 1916 in Salem, and by 1918, they had one daughter. According to information provided on his WWI draft registration card, George left the woolen mill for a short time to work as a butcher in Dallas. However, with the beginning of WWI and a contract from the Army to manufacture blankets, George was lured back to work at TKWM.

After the war, business at TKWM was down and occasional shutdowns occurred, for up to two months at a time. To make matters worse, according to his oral history, George got on the bad side of the spinner boss. To solve the problem, he moved back to the carding room and worked the night shift for 12 years. George and Ethel lived at 820 S 21st St. in Salem.

Times at the mill remained tough through the Depression of the 1930s. George moved back to the spinning department. The family moved to 1385 Hines St. and niece Marguerite “Maggie” Barnes came to live with them. By 1940, the family had moved to the Englewood area of Salem. And by 1945 he had shifted back to the carding department at TKWM. He had a near accident with a carding machine in 1955. George retired from TKWM when it closed. Ethel passed away April 1987 and George the following year, on 3 Apr 1988 at the age of 94. They are both buried in City View Cemetery in Salem, OR.
