William “Bill’ Loewen worked for TKWM from 1930 until his death in 1951 as a carder, then boss carder.
William Frank Loewen was born 2 Feb 1905 in Rosthern, Saskatchewan, Canada to Frank and Agatha [Neufeld] Loewen. Although born in Canada, Bill lived for a time in southern Russia, homeland of his parents. They were Mennonites from the Choritza Colony. They came to the U.S. for the second time in 1911 and took up farmland near Hydro, Montana. The family moved for a second time, to the Willamette Valley near Salem, Oregon.
On 18 July 1925 William married Anna Pauline Janzen in Salem, OR. He worked as a laborer for the City Street Improvement Dept. and the couple lived at 1520 Trade St. By 1930 the couple had three children, William E, Delpha P and Norma. William’s sister Mary lived with the family at the time of the 1930 census. By 1935, William had found work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill as a carder. Anna found work as a waitress.
William continued work for TKWM until his death on 25 Jun 1951 at age 46. No cause of death was specified in his obituary. He was cremated and his ashes interned at Mount Crest Abby Mausoleum. Anna remarried the summer of 1952 to James Horton Wyatt, a war veteran from Portland, seven years her junior. She passed on 24 Jun 1997. Her ashes reside next to first husband William at Mount Crest Abby Mausoleum in Salem. |
