Life Story

James A. Meithof worked in the Card Room at TKWM starting 25 Aug 1958.

James “Jim” Arthur Meithof was born on 20 Apr 1937 in Oregon to John J. and Marie [Blum] Meithof. One of seven children, he spent his early years in Salem following his parents’ divorce. He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School, graduating in June 1952 as part of the largest class to date. He later graduated from Leslie Junior High and attended Salem High School before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in the fall of 1954.

Jim trained at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Norman, Oklahoma, and in May 1955 reported to North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego, California. He served as a plane captain during the Korean War.

Following his military service, Jim worked in the Card Room at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill beginning in August 1958. Later that year, on 8 Nov 1958, he married Shirley Jackson in Salem, Oregon. He was 21 years old and worked as a carder, while Shirley, 18, was employed in the paper industry. In 1959, Jim took a position as a psychiatric aid with the Oregon State Hospital in Salem.

Jim dedicated 32 years to his work at the Oregon State Hospital in Salem, ultimately retiring as the evening communication supervisor. When the hospital made the controversial decision to participate in the filming of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Jim was hired as a movie extra.

He and Shirley built a custom home in the Silverton Hills, doing much  of the construction themselves. Their property featured a secluded, wooded setting with a creek, ponds, and abundant wildlife.

Shirley worked for Moore Business Forms for 32 years, and after her retirement, the couple embraced a snowbird lifestyle, spending winters in Palm Desert, California, for six months of every year.

James Arthur Meithof died on 26 Dec 2014 in Silverton, at the age of 77. He was buried with military honors in the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
