Job(s) at TKWM Finisher, Weaver
Life Story Julia May (Sheridan) Doherty worked at the TKWM from 1905-1917 as a weaver. Her brother William, her sisters Mary Agnes and Martha were also valued employees at the mill. Her sister Cecelia spent a brief time working at the mill when she was a teen but she did not make a career of it.

Julia May Sheridan was born on 10 May 1874 in Salem, Oregon. She was the fifth of eight children born to James Phil Sheridan and Mary Ellen (Casey) Sheridan. Julia’s father James came to Oregon around 1850 and was 53 years old when he married Mary Ellen who was only 22. This was his 3rd marriage; children came from all three marriages for a total of 24 children. James passed away in 1889 leaving Mary Ellen with a large, young family.

Julia worked as a domestic in 1896 in Salem, OR. In Oct 1900 Julia took a position as nurse at the St Vincent Hospital in Portland according to a newspaper article. Her sister Martha was also a nurse there in 1918.

In 1901 Julia married Daniel Patrick Doherty in Multnomah County, OR. The couple lived in eastern Oregon where the Doherty family had roots. The couple ran a hotel and saloon in Lexington, OR and for a short time they also ran the Alta House in Pendleton, OR. Their daughter Mary Kathryn was born in Lexington on 6 Feb 1903.

By 1905 Julia was living back in Salem, OR. She was working as a Finisher for the TKWM Co and living at 513 S 18th. The couple apparently reconciled for a time as their son Joseph Daniel Doherty was born in Lexington 3 Sep 1907.

In Dec 1907 Dan P Doherty got into a quarrel with gentleman while drinking at another saloon in Lexington. His saloon was closed at the time because his license had expired. Oscar Allen ended up shot to death. Doherty stood trial for murder and was found guilty.

Julia could not be found in the 1910 census but Daniel is listed as a prisoner in Salem. By 1911 the Salem City Directory Julia is living back at 513 S 18th and working as a finisher for TKWM Co. again.

In 1913 Julia is listed as a weaver at TKWM Co in the City Directory. Her residence is 454 Hood and it says Daniel P Doherty is also living there, working as a gardener at 765 S Commercial. I believe this is a mistake and the gardener was Julia’s son, Joseph Daniel Doherty, not Daniel P.

On 5 Feb 1915 Julia was granted a divorce from Daniel and given custody of their two children. Julia continued to work at the woolen mill.

On 4 Mar 1916 employees from TKWM sent a delegation to Portland to appear before Gov Withycombe.  Julia spoke at this meeting to protest against an eight-hour system for women mill workers. There were 20 female weavers at TKWM at the time. They did not want their hours or their pay cut. They also appeared before the Industrial Welfare Commission in Portland. Julia was front and center!

On 3 Nov 1917 Julia married for a second time to Mathew E Sullivan from Salem. This marriage was short lived and a divorce was granted 18 Oct 1919.

Julia moved with her two children to 527 ½ Columbia Boulevard in Portland after the divorce. The 1920 census lists her working as a weaver in a woolen mill but have to assume it was one of the mills in Portland.

The 1930 census shows Julia working at the Oregon State Training School for boys in Hubbard as a Service Building Matron. Her son Joseph is working for a sawmill in Yamhill and living with his aunt Sarah’s family.

The 1940 census has Julia and her son Joseph living in West Salem. Her son is a gardener and Julia is listed as head of household but no occupation.

In March of 1942 Julia left for Portland again. This time to reside permanently. Julia’s son Joseph Daniel Doherty passed away after a long illness with tuberculosis on 5 Dec 1944. Joseph was buried at Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem.

The 1950 census lists Julia living at Mount St Joseph’s Home for the Aged in Portland. Julia passed away from broncho-pneumonia on 20 May 1959 at the Multnomah Hospital. Julia was buried at Belcrest Memorial Park next to her two children. Julia was survived by her daughter, Mary Kathryn (Doherty) Spalding. Mary Kathryn passed away on 14 Apr 1980.
