Mabel Jones worked in the Spinning Room at TKWM in March of 1906.
Mabel Lenore Jones was born 23 Nov 1882 in Brooks, OR to Madison L. and Emma [Hovenden] Jones. She was one of nine children born to the couple. Her father was a pioneer legislator and farmer who saw the potential for development in the Lake Labish area and led the effort to clear and drain the rich bottom-land. Mabel attended Sacred Heart Academy and later Willamette University . She graduated from Willamette in June 1888. Then in 1903 she earned a spot in the Carnival court of Queen Agnes Gilbert, a celebration that would later be referred to as the first Cherry Fair in Salem.
Mabel married Anderson M. Cannon 14 June 1905 at her parent’s home in Labish Meadows, OR. The groom was a member of the law firm of Carson & Cannon of this city, and a widower with a small daughter. The couple would add three more daughters to their home.
In 1908 Anderson was appointed Clerk of the United States District Court at Portland so they moved from Salem. By 1918, he had gone back to private practice as a lawyer, specializing as a bankruptcy referee.
Husband Anderson died 16 April 1942 after a car accident near Bingen, Washington. His sister Mrs. Jenny Marvin was killed in the accident that took place in a tunnel three miles east of Bingen, Washington.
After her husband’s death, Mabel traveled to Europe, then Greece and eventually relocated to Carmel, California. She died 2 Sep 1969. Both Mabel and husband Anderson were cremated and their ashes interred in River View Cemetery in Portland. |
