Life Story

Nora Cheney worked at TKWM as a weaver from 1905-1909. Her sisters Sabina and Mary Alice also worked at the mill.

Lenora Cheney was born 16 Nov 1884 in Crescent City, California to George Oscar and Katherine [Forestall] Cheney. Her father George was a finish carpenter, a craftsman whose projects included the construction of the large filing cases in the Supreme Court building, clerk’s office.

In 1902 the Grants Pass newspaper recorded that father George had left his family in Salem for his homestead 15 miles up Cow Creek in Douglas County. He had been engaged in finishing work in Grants Pass during the Fall, returned to Salem to spend a week with his family and brought his daughter Nora home with him to Cow Creek for company.

Nora was baptized in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Salem, OR on 7 April 1891. Accounts of her schooling differ with a 1930 census record that she never attended school and the 1940 census record with the highest grade completed as fifth.

She married Henry Gaedeke on 14 June 1905 in Galesville, OR. It was a double wedding with Henry’s brother Fred. Witnesses were Henry’s brother Fred and Nora’s sister Sabina Fisher. The wedding took place at the home of Charles Gaedeke [brother] outside Galesville, OR and was performed by a minister of the gospel. Henry was over the age of 30 and Nora over 20, according to the marriage record. They would be the parents of 7 children; Florence, Henry, Inez, Arthur, Bernice, Fred, and Robert.

Following their wedding the couple went to Seattle, Washington where Henry worked as a conductor. It was here that son Henry was born in 1906. Within two years the family returned to Oregon where Henry took work as a miner in a quartz mine near Wolf Creek, Josephine County, OR.

By 1912, the family returned to Galesville, OR to work the Cheney family homestead owned by Nora’s father George. Here two more children were added to the family, daughter Inez and son Arthur. They remained on the property until Henry sought work as a logger near Marshfield, OR. Daughter Bernice was born here in 1920.  They returned to the family property in Douglas County by 1924. Two additional sons were added to the family here, Fred and Robert. This was the final move for the family. They remained on the family homestead.

Husband Henry died 12 Dec 1965 in Forest Glen Hospital in Canyonville, OR. Cause of death was listed as hypostatic pneumonia following cerebral vascular accident. Nora died 16 Sep 1966 in Forest Glen Hospital, in Canyonville, OR. Cause of death was hypostatic pneumonia following cerebral vascular accident. She was buried with her husband in Glendale Memorial Cemetery in Glendale, OR.
