Life Story

Mary Alice Cheney worked as a weaver at TKWM from 1916-1920. Her sisters Sabina and Nora also worked for the mill.

Mary Alice Cheney was born 9 May 1901 in Canyonville, OR to George Oscar and Katherine [Forestall] Cheney. Father George took his family to Salem while he worked as a finish carpenter on the State Supreme Court building, then left them while he went south following jobs. Later, he took up a homestead 15 miles up Cow Creek in Douglas County but returned to Salem for visits, often taking an older daughter back to keep him company for brief periods of time.

Mary went to work for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in 1916, five years before her marriage to Emiddio Bello on 7 June 1922. Her husband was an Italian immigrant, a machinist at Salem Iron Works and 30 years old. She was 21 years old and a weaver at the woolen mill. He was also a veteran of World War I. They were the parents of three sons: Benjamin Joseph, Alfred and Paul, and four daughters: Marjorie, Louise, Virginia and Teresa.

In the late 1920s the couple purchased a garage and service station at 2210 Turner Rd. Emiddio operated it until his death on 16 June 1948. Mary Alice died at the age of 72 on 27 Mar 1974 in Salem, OR. Both Mary and Emiddio are buried in St. Barbara Cemetery in Salem, OR.
