Life Story

Sabina Cheney worked as a weaver at TKWM in the early 1900s. Her husband Jake Fisher worked in the same department and for a similar short duration. Two of her sisters also worked for the mill, Nora and Mary Alice Cheney

Sabina Cheney was born 3 Jan 1877 in Manchester, New Hampshire to George and Martha [Henderson] Cheney. Her father George was a finish carpenter who followed the Gold Rush to California. At the time of research, no details were uncovered regarding the death of Sabina’s mother and a remarriage date and place for her father. We pick up the family’s trail in Redding, Shasta, CA when Sabina’s sisters Nora and Barbara were born in 1884 and 1886, respectively.

The family emigrated to Oregon in the 1890s. Her father had taken a finish carpentry job for the State of Oregon building custom furniture for the Oregon Supreme Court building in 1897. Sabina and sisters found work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in the weaving department. It was here that Sabina met her future husband Jacob “Jake” Fisher.

The couple married on 24 Sep 1902 in Glendale, Oregon. The marriage took place in the Hotel Kennedy and was performed by Pastor J. Edward Blair of the Presbyterian Church. Sabina’s sister Nora was a witness. Following their marriage the couple returned to Salem and their work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill.

By 1910 the couple moved to Douglas County, OR where they purchased the property of Sabina’s grandfather Charles Cheney, five miles out Cow Creek Rd near Azalea, OR. He lived with them until his death. The couple remained on the farm until their deaths. Sabina’s sister Nora also moved to Azalea to homestead with her husband Henry Gaedecke.

Sabina died 16 Nov 1959 in Azalea, OR. She was buried in the Glendale Memorial Cemetery. She died suddenly at home, at age 82 from cardiac decompensation. Her husband Jake died 10 Dec 1968 in Canyonville, OR. His death certificate records burial as the Masonic Cemetery in Glendale, OR.
