Photograph of invitation for event held in Salem in honor of Susan B. Anthony’s 80th Birthday. WHC Collections 1994.087.0045 detail.

At least one hundred of Salem’s bright women will sit down to the banquet in honor of Susan B. Anthony’s eightieth birthday. The festivities begin at 9 pm promptly and will last into the small hours of the morning. Miss Brown’s ladies orchestra is engaged and the great dining hall will be a bower of tropical plants and hothouse flowers. Mr. and Mrs. Conner have ransacked the earth, sea, and air for the dainties on the menu, which is very elaborate. Two hundred invitations are out and there has been a surprising large acceptance, considering that no gentlemen escorts are permitted — not even reporters. CAPITAL JOURNAL 15 Feb 1900
